We all know that in the onboarding and account opening process, digitisation is no longer desirable but expected – after all, 70% of Gen Z and millennials opened their bank accounts online this year.  Most customers also understand how important security is in this process and rely on organisations to supply the safest approach to verification throughout the journey.

Which is why the high levels of onboarding abandonment are so frustrating – 90% of fintech businesses see consumers simply leaving the process when the necessary steps become too time consuming, require paper work and verification that is possibly not on hand or if the process becomes too inconvenient.

So what is the solution to clearing this stumbling block and ensuring customers complete the process quickly and efficiently?

We discussed this topic recently in a lively and engaging webinar with CBA. In case you missed it, we’ve summarised the key outcomes here,

Key theme 1: Customer centricity is key to success

A common misconception is that in order to have a secure process, the ease of use for the consumer must be sacrificed. But the preference in almost all consumer groups now is to use completely digitised processes, which allows them to complete the task remotely and in their own time.

The key to creating a successful and completed account opening or onboarding journey lies in placing the consumer at the centre of all problem solving. If we can use technology to ensure we are compliant and secure, we can then solve for every challenge the consumer may face. Time constraints are a big issue and people don’t have the time (and patience) to navigate layers and layers of security. A complicated journey consisting of many questions and steps can also trigger drop-off, so when considering the experience, the holy trinity of security should be kept in mind; simple, safe and compliant. Giving consumers options helps to make them feel more comfortable with the process and as a result will make a completed journey more likely.

When we’re designing each step, we need to keep in mind the importance of the ‘human touch’. Each generation prefers a different level of human interaction – some want to be totally remote, others really want to speak to a person when making a big or important decision and others don’t mind a hybrid approach. Technology like shared spaces and virtual meetings can help customers feel supported whilst allowing for collaboration and co-browsing, all the while keeping security tight.

Key theme 2: Cybercrime is a bigger threat than you think

Fraud is a major threat to individuals and to business. Cybercrime cost the US $8 Trillion last year and every 14 seconds someone in the US experiences identity theft.

Criminals are incredibly advanced in 2023 and use sophisticated tech to breach security measures. As a result, we always need to be ahead of the game when designing our precautions and levels. Part of creating this level of security is to apply layers for protection, without making too much friction for the consumer. Clever, strategic design can come in at every touchpoint and relies yet again on consumer-centricity. When doing the research, we must ask ourselves what would benefit the user and include consumers right from the beginning of the planning. A smart way to approach this is to ensure all instructions are quick to implement and easy to understand. When we are clear about what we want consumers to do – and why – at the offset, we are setting ourselves up for success.

Key theme 3: Biometric technology is both secure and seamless

The right biometric technology is a game changer in creating an enjoyable experience while keeping compliant and secure. Face biometrics is a convenient option for verification and authentication and is helping pave the way to a secure, password-less future.

Faster and more efficient than other verification methods, facial biometrics keep the journey neat and simple and is incredibly secure, with liveness detection as part of the process.

Part of the value of biometrics is in its ability to be integrated into most security software and its compatibility with smartphones. This means it’s accessible to most and that it can be used again throughout the journey, creating a greater sense of comfort for customers.

With the right biometric technology, we can strike that perfect balance between customer experience and class-leading security processes, so that customers feel the security in place without all the friction that stops them from completing their onboarding or account opening tasks.

An evening of wine and truths. In Vino Veridas! https://veridas.com/en/an-evening-of-wine-and-truths-in-vino-veridas/ Wed, 05 Jul 2023 14:55:00 +0000 https://veridas.com/?p=57991

Hello everyone – and a special thanks to those who attended our most recent event, where we explored inclusivity and identity truth in Fintech with a wonderful community of category influencers.

It was a truly inspiring evening, where fascinating ideas and experiences were shared by senior female leaders (and a few men too!) in the industry, reminding us all of the importance of diverse opinions on key topics like this one.

For those who couldn’t make it, here’s a little taste of the key, stand-out insights we uncovered, over a variety of exquisite wines from the UK and Spain!

Key insight 1: Holistic user improvement

While technology and digital disruption is net positive, not everything can be laid at technologies door. We still have to build better customer experiences at all touchpoints. Identity verification solutions play a significant role in achieving holistic user improvement by offering seamless and secure verification processes. Businesses should prioritize user experience when implementing such solutions, as it directly impacts customer trust, satisfaction, and overall interactions.

Key insight 2: No more generic customer profiles

Many product teams today are still focused on building products that cater to a generic customer profile. However, it is no longer viable to develop solutions that target only one type of customer. To truly improve products, there needs to be a greater emphasis on product research and understanding diverse customer segments.

Without diversity within the product team itself, the product’s potential for improvement is limited. Different perspectives and insights from team members with varied backgrounds and experiences are crucial for creating innovative and customer-centric solutions. This collaborative approach enables product teams to adapt and offer customised experiences, similar to the successful strategies employed by brands like Uber and Airbnb.

By building products tailored to specific customer profiles, financial services providers can deliver better outcomes and meet the unique needs of individual customers. Customization allows for personalised experiences, enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty. It’s important for product teams to embrace this approach and invest in the necessary research and resources to create products that truly cater to diverse customer segments.

Through the utilisation of an identity verification platform, businesses can benefit from customisable verification processes that align with specific customer profiles. This empowers them to enhance security and compliance while delivering tailored experiences that cater to the unique needs of their customers.

Key insight 3: A focus on empathy for mature audiences

Too many tech products focus solely on the tech-savvy, inadvertently excluding individuals who may not be as comfortable with cutting-edge technology. However, it is important to bridge the physical and digital gap, as more mature audiences often prefer the guidance and human interaction they receive in a branch setting. This approach can effectively break down barriers and foster trust. Interestingly, this audience represents a larger and more valuable market segment, given their financial capabilities.

By embracing a “phygital” approach that combines the best of both physical and digital experiences, businesses can cater to the needs of all customer demographics, including the tech-savvy and those seeking personalised guidance. Voice biometrics, for instance, provide a great example of super-advanced technology on the back end to verify an individual’s voice, while the front end can be as simple as making a regular phone call for the user.

Adapting technology in this way can improve engagement across elder segments of the client base and transform the way society perceives these changes, which are often considered too fast or risky for those who may face difficulties in adapting.

Key insight 4: Make access invisible

How much is too much when dealing with identity services? We are bombarded by repeated onboarding; everything we do requires us to give away information. The perfect solution will reduce this requirement by being interoperable and accepted everywhere. Expectations are high in terms of speed and ease, so processes should become more invisible to the customer.

In this sense, biometrics hold the key to making these identity verification processes smooth while upgrading security overall.

Key insight 5: Loyalty is no longer a given

We need to gain a better understanding of what hurdles we create in designing the service: are we combining the way the experience should function versus the one the customers want? Making changes like these is a big deal to most banks, so it’s important to agree on how far we need to look into the future to include social elements like identity, gender diversity, and more.

Because it’s so easy for customers to switch, we must accept that loyalty can no longer be expected.

Key insight 6: Banks must outsmart criminals

There is an intricate and symbiotic balancing act between friction and risk. Fraud is an ongoing focus and should be part of the building strategy and future development of the product. Criminals can innovate faster than most banks so we should use the tools they do, embrace a collective understanding of tactics and expose them earlier.

Effective and secure utilization of AI is undoubtedly necessary to combat malicious uses of this technology, such as deepfakes. That is why banks and financial institutions should embrace these new technologies with vendors who can keep pace with fraudsters.

Nueva llamada a la acción

Key insight 7: Never forget the human element

People are biased towards filters they don’t like – specifically the ones they see and must use when they onboard. The identity process makes people look ugly (and thus uncomfortable) because of the lack of filters they are so used to using.

But from a broader perspective, biometric processes should begin to be understood as a right for users. Exercising their identity securely, privately, and easily should always be an option, eliminating outdated password or SMS systems. The human component of biometrics is that it allows us to identify ourselves based on who we are, not what we know or possess, which can easily be known or used by someone else. Enabling these types of identification processes allows users to be themselves without friction.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this peek inside the evening’s discussion and look forward to seeing you at our next event for more thought-provoking conversation.

Cheers, Sabrina.

Last week the JW Marriott Hotel in Austin, Texas hosted a new edition of the leading event on innovation in bank branches and commercial banking in the United States, Future Branches.

Leading representatives from North American financial institutions presented the most relevant success stories, best practices, and future predictions for bank branches and the rest of the financial sector.

Digital transformation, improving the customer and employee experience, and brand purpose in banking were some of the most recurring themes during the three-day event.

Part of the Veridas team was present in Austin to show first-hand how identity solutions based on biometric technology and document verification can take the digitization and transformation of bank branches to the next level, automating processes and improving the user experience with maximum security and fraud protection.

“Participating in this event has been a great opportunity to hear from Banks, Community Banks and Credit Unions. We were able to discuss the paradigm of seeking the best customer satisfaction, while at the same time there is a growth need in the financial institution; and how this context relates to the changing role of branches”, says Michel Nerrant, SVP North America at Veridas.

Growth, Cross-Selling, Loyalty, and Efficiency: Veridas at the service of financial institutions.

According to industry expert and thought leader Gina Bleedorn, Head of Experience at Adrenaline consulting firm and speaker at one of the event’s conferences, financial institutions rely on four fundamental pillars to ensure their competitive advantage: Growth, Cross-selling, Loyalty, and Efficiency.

Veridas’ identity verification, user authentication and fraud prevention solutions support financial services in each of these pillars:

The second edition of the Veridas Cybersecurity CTF Challenge, a new success in terms of participation https://veridas.com/en/second-edition-challenge-ctf-cibersecurity/ Fri, 02 Dec 2022 16:43:35 +0000 https://veridas.com/?p=44705

The second edition of the Navarra Digital Security Forum was held at the Navarra Marketing Club on November 18. On this occasion, the 2nd Cybersecurity CTF Challenge – Veridas was celebrated, a competition in which participants faced different technical challenges in the field of cybersecurity. The event was organized by ATANA and sponsored by Laboral Kutxa, with the institutional support of the Navarra Government and the National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE), and the collaboration of Veridas and the Marketing Club of Navarra.

In addition to the CTF Challenge, there were presentations by different speakers, who in 15-minute pills, explained their knowledge, key points, and success stories about the approach and correct implementation of digital security systems in companies. ATANA cluster highlighted that this industry is generating a lot of business and employment opportunities. “Last year there were 63,000 job demands in cybersecurity in our country. It is already a strategic field in many sectors and in Public Administrations”.

Speakers included Juan Delfín Peláez, a cybersecurity expert at the National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), Julio César Miguel Pérez, General Director of Grupo CFI, Enrique Amor, B2B Sales Manager at Euskaltel, Raúl Orduna, Director of Digital Security at Vicomtech, Teo Murguía, CEO of DISCOM, Juan Antonio Rodríguez, Head of the Anti-Cybercrime Department of the Guardia Civil (UCO), Pello Bayona, Business Director of Navarra at Laboral Kutxa and Juan Ramón Aramendia, Head of Cyber Security Product Engineering at Auriga.

On behalf of Veridas, Mikel Lezáun, Business Development Manager, had the opportunity to connect with attendees in a presentation in which he was accompanied by Pello Bayona, while Ivan Gulina, head of cybersecurity at Veridas, stressed the importance of protecting software in a world where everything is digitized: “We must follow the four steps: develop a secure code, rely on tools, test and keep updated. As digitization increases, the danger increases”.

The common conclusion reached by all exhibitors has to do with the importance of being protected as much as possible because although no one is exempt from fraud, technology today gives you the ability to avoid it.

Daniel Díez Tainta, winner of the CFT Cybersecurity Challenge

This year, the challenge of the CTF Cybersecurity Challenge consisted of solving a series of technical challenges related to the world of cybersecurity and computer science. Topics included web vulnerabilities, cryptography, reverse engineering, forensics, programming and steganography.  Each participant had three hours to tackle the challenges provided, in the order they wished and with a “CTF-Capture The Flag” dynamic where, when each participant solved a challenge, a “flag” that awarded points was displayed. These points depended on the difficulty of the challenge,  The winner, for second consecutive year, was Daniel Díez Tainta, Security Engineer at Auctane, who received the winner’s trophy for the second CTF cybersecurity challenge and a cash prize of 1,000 euros. The second place in the ranking was won by Iñaki de Miguel, from the company Eosol, who was awarded 600 euros. Finally, Mikel Izal, professor of Telematics Engineering at the Public University of Navarra, won third place in the competition, with a prize of 300 euros. All cash prizes were provided by the event sponsor Laboral Kutxa.  Ivan Gulina, representative of Veridas, presented the awards and stressed the importance of working for solutions that benefit society: “Through this event, we show our commitment to young talent and to the promotion of new technologies that are aligned with the vision of eliminating fraud, improving user experience and reducing costs for companies”.

The growing visibility of solutions in the cybersecurity world

All the speakers agreed on the need to promote an industry that provides security and reduces costs. In his speech, the Councilor for University, Innovation and Digital Transformation of the Government of Navarra, Juan Cruz Cigudosa, emphasized that “Cybersecurity is not a project, but a process. And we want to continue to keep Navarra at the forefront of innovation in cybersecurity”.

Also, Juan Antonio Rodriguez, head of the department against cybercrime of the Guardia Civil, highlighted the advantage of time: “companies must report in order to get to the cybercriminals. And they must do so quickly, as time is of key significance”.

Events like these are of great importance for companies that fight fraud every day through technological and innovative solutions. In this way, great knowledge is generated in the public opinion of the future of cybersecurity, in a reality where the physical and digital space is almost shared.

Veridas, named by Gartner as a benchmark company at the Identity & Access Management Summit 2022 in London https://veridas.com/en/veridas-named-by-gartner-as-a-benchmark-company-at-the-identity-access-management-summit-2022-in-london/ https://veridas.com/en/veridas-named-by-gartner-as-a-benchmark-company-at-the-identity-access-management-summit-2022-in-london/#respond Fri, 20 May 2022 07:45:06 +0000 https://veridas.com/?p=34922

Veridas was more than present at Gartner’s Identity & Access Management Summit in London, an event where they discussed how digital transformation continues to accelerate the adoption of new identity and access management (IAM) approaches and technologies. Veridas was cited as a reference company in terms of biometrics solutions in one of the essential identity forums in the world.

BBVA, pioneers in digital transformation thanks to Veridas

Our CEO, Eduardo Azanza, and our Global Marketing Product Marketing Manager, Miguel Zarraluqui, accompanied BBVA’s Global Head of Digital Identity, Miguel Villaumbrales, who gave a presentation on “The experience of digital identity and security that drives the digital transformation of a bank”.

In it, Villaumbrales told about the bank’s digitalization trajectory and how Veridas has helped drive more than 30 use cases worldwide, in countries such as Spain, Mexico, Switzerland, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Italy, Uruguay or Turkey, among others. “Working as one team is the only way to improve and deploy use cases on a large scale,” said Miguel during his presentation.

Emphasizing the case of BBVA Mexico, where thanks to our voice biometrics solution we have improved the lives of thousands of Mexican pensioners, Villaumbrales pointed out that “the elderly accept biometrics when a problem is solved for them and we have achieved this thanks to Veridas technology”.

Thanks to Veridas’ Digital Onboarding solution, he also reviewed how BBVA became the first financial institution to allow remote account opening thanks to a simple selfie. BBVA has increased its customer acquisition through digital channels by 81% in the last year alone (1Q22 vs. 1Q21), going from a digital acquisition rate of 6% in 2017 to achieving 57% today.

Finally, BBVA’s Global Head of Digital Identity told what their dual security strategy is based on: device biometrics, according to FIDO (Fast Identity Online Alliance) standards, and Veridas biometrics. This allows them to adapt to the needs of each use case, country, and customer type, which means that digital sales account for 73% of all units sold by BBVA.

Veridas, recognized by Gartner as a global benchmark provider

The event featured many presentations by experts in which they reviewed issues related to digital identity and access management. One of the topics that stood out on the event’s agenda was the adoption of passwordless strategies as a fundamental piece in the acceleration and consolidation of digitalization.

One of the three presentations by Ant Allan, Vice President of Analysis at Gartner Research, dealt with the steps to achieving a passwordless strategy. Allan reviewed the importance of adopting solutions based on inherency elements concerning possession or knowledge elements, emphasizing that on-device biometrics cannot be considered exclusively as an inherency factor due to its direct dependence on the device.

In this regard, Ant Allan mentioned the vendors that he, as a recognized expert in authentication strategies, considers worldwide reference manufacturers, including Veridas in this exclusive list.

Outstanding results

Veridas will host two sessions next December 14-16 at the NIST Speaker Recognition Evaluation 2021 workshop after obtaining excellent results at the 2021 Speaker Recognition Evaluation (SRE21).

This evaluation is the next in an ongoing series of speaker recognition evaluations conducted by the NIST since 1996. The objectives of the evaluation series are to effectively measure the system-calibrated performance of the current state of technology, provide a common framework that enables the research community to explore promising new ideas in speaker recognition, and support the community in their development of advanced technology incorporating these ideas.

In addition, Veridas is also currently participating in the ongoing 2020 CTS Challenge. The primary task is determining whether a specified target speaker is speaking during a given speech segment with data sources containing multilingual speech. Veridas’ engine, thanks to its text and language-independent features, is performing at the top of the board (check here).

Veridas has performed at the top of the list in both evaluations.  After these results, NIST evaluators have invited Veridas subject-matter experts to host two sessions at the next NIST SRE21 workshop to explain the performance of the das-Peak voice biometric engine in further detail.

Top technology and transparency, our core values

Veridas has been submitting its technologies to NIST’s evaluations since 2018 and continues to do so with the firm belief that constant scrutiny is the only way to maintain its position as a global leader in the biometric solutions market.

The biometric engines submitted to NIST evaluations are the same that we offer to clients in our cloud. The evaluation results become even more significant as they are tested on the actual commercial product rather than on specific variations adjusted to perform better under each category’s requirements. Veridas das-Peak engine is balanced and a top-performer in every scenario, making it a secure and feasible solution for real-life use cases.

Introduction

Veridas took part in the 7th edition of the Connect:ID conference and exhibition at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C.

Connect:ID is an innovative international conference and exhibition that brings on the most advanced identity technologies and the opportunities for their management in the physical and digital worlds. This two-day event has a special focus on solutions for Governments, financial institutions, corporate end users, systems integrators, researchers, consultants, and national and industry-focused media.

Valuable insights exchanged during the event

Veridas’ representatives had a chance to exchange words with other industry leaders and interact with decision-makers from the Department of Defense, the US Army and multiple Federal Agencies that work hand in hand with the leading edge public sector in not only defining best practices but also shaping future policy with digital identification and keeping them secure.
According to the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), a well trained human reviewer is only 80% accurate when performing a comparison between the physical person and their ID. Veridas’ solutions close that gap and help prevent fraud by bringing into play its world-leading technology to verify identities in real time, anywhere and with accuracy rates greater than 99.9%. Veridas’ state-of-the-art biometrics is assessed by the NIST and ranked among the top commercial solutions in 3 different categories: facial recognition (both 1:1 and 1:N) and speaker recognition (1:1).

Needless to say, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is the most relevant institution in terms of biometric technologies’ standardization. NIST carries out periodic evaluations of biometric engines submitted by different providers to assess and provide unbiased accuracy and performance rates in different environments.

NIST participation is completely free of charge and open to any vendor or institution.

Veridas has been submitting its technologies to NIST’s evaluations since 2018 and continues to do so with the strong belief that constant scrutiny is the only way to maintain its position as a global leader in the biometric solutions market.

Exciting projects ahead

During Connect:ID 2021, Veridas confirmed that there are currently only 4 Million digital versions of vaccination cards in the US. The standardization of an acceptable method for review by travel authorities is still pending although it is an urgent need. Veridas’ patented Covid pass was conceived as the ideal solution for this purpose. In that sense, Veridas is currently working with global partners in providing this solution to cover the market demand.

A special thanks from Veridas’ US team

Stanley Day, Veridas’ US Country Manager, and his team would like to thank all the speakers, attendees and exhibitors for their participation in such an inspiring event. A special thanks to:

  • Kay Chopard, the newly appointed Executive Director of the Kantara Initiative, a unique global ‘commons’ that operates conformity assessment, assurance and grant of Trust Marks against de-jure standards under its Trust Framework program for sharing her vision and input with us on how best to provide a solution that operates within the Trust Framework. Her efforts with mentoring Women in Identity are also worth mentioning.
  • William Graves, Chief Engineer And Product Manager Biometrics, Department of Defense (DoD) for sharing with us that biometrics and security are a fluid environment where we must collaborate and leverage our strengths collectively in order to stay abreast of the current and future threats to our identities both physical and digital.
  • Alex Song, Director of Capture Management, LexisNexis Risk Solutions for providing direction and showing his willingness to explore new areas of collaboration.
